Janwani was formed as a social wing of Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) – one of the premier chambers in the country. While working towards chamber’s objective of making Pune the most attractive destination of investment in India, it was realized that we cannot make our city the most attractive destination unless we make it a better place to live and work. It gave rise to Janwani- city’s most trust-worthy and reputed public forum. It started in 2006 under the chairmanship of Mr. B.G. Deshmukh, former Cabinet Secretary, GoI. Since April 2014, Janwani is a Charitable Public Trust under the under Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950.
Janwani means ‘Voice of People’. Janwani works for the city and with its citizens. Janwani’s approach has always been remained city-centered and collaborative. It never works in isolation, but always tries to incorporate like-minded people, non-government organizations, politicians and administrators. Janwani goes hand-in-hand with technology and people.
Janwani’s objectives include making Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) the best place to live and work, advocating and promoting equitable and sustainable development in PMR, creating a common platform for stakeholders to arrive at a common solution that can be implemented and to identify gaps and priority areas in the development process and provide well-researched and implementable solutions.
After studying needs of expanding cities and increasing urban population, Janwani works in certain focus areas based on community needs. Currently, it focuses on six major areas of operations namely Environment, Urban Planning, Governance, Traffic and Transportation, Heritage and Energy. During the past eight years, Janwani has succeeded in establishing various models in these Focus Areas to resolve the urban issues.
