Everyone wants to live in a city which will not only provide one a better livelihood but also the atmosphere to cherish, a city with better environment, mobility, enriched culture, basic amenities and harmony. This will not only make the life better for the citizen but also attract investments in city. Citizens should feel a sense of responsibility towards city's issues and they should be involved in planning and management of development programs. To channelize this Active Citizenship, members of Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) came forward and established a platform named 'Janwani' i.e. Voice of People, where people can put up their voice for betterment of their city. 'Janwani' was established in year 2006 under Chairmanship of Mr. B.G. Deshmukh, former Cabinet Secretary, and Government of India. Since April 2014, Janwani is registered as a Charitable Public Trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950 and headquartered at Senapati Bapat Road, Pune. Janwani's Governing Board comprises representation of philanthropists from Pune city with rich and diverse sectorial experience. Since inception 'Janwani' has kept its approach city-centered, collaborative, analytical and data driven. It has implemented various projects on Environment, Governance, Heritage, Traffic & Transportation and Urban Planning to make Pune 'Most Livable City' in country. Janwani is implementing three major projects on Solid Waste Management like E-waste collection, segregated garbage management in Pune city with its partners viz. Pune Municipal Corporation, Pune Cantonment Board, Adar Poonawalla Clean City Initiative, Cummins India Ltd. & Persistent systems. In year 2016-17 it has extended its outreach. The Solid Waste Management program, in last 6 years have obtained recognitions like The Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) award for Best practices to improve living Environment, ICON Solid Waste Management Award of Excellence in Solid Waste Management, Vasundhara Award Government of Maharashtra, Dubai International Award by UN Habitat-Best Practice, Zero Garbage, India etc. Under the Heritage Theme, the Janwani has come up with restructured model of 'Heritage Festival' in collaboration with INTACH-Pune, which was celebrated from 3rd February to 12 February of this year with its 31 partners and 6 associates and consisting of total 55 different events including Walks, Workshops, Film Screenings, Games, Quiz, Exhibitions and Lectures were organized to sensitize people on rich heritage of the city. This year the theme of festival was "Confluence of Culture". Along, with solid waste management Janwani has also continued its award winning 'Heritage Walks' which is one of attraction in city on weekends.
