A vision is a statement of aspirations and intentions and therefore, it is essential that we fully recognize the need for determined effort to transform all these potentials into realities. Ultimately, it is not our capacity for prediction, but our action that will determine the outcome. That action needs to be based on proper appreciation of the forces available for accelerating our progress Planning Commission's Report of the Committee on India Vision 2020

The Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) formed in July 1999 constitutes of Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, Dehu road, Khadki and Pune Cantonment boards, Municipalities of Lonavla, Talegoan and Alandi and 397 villages. It is one of the most rapidly growing regions of Maharashtra. The tremendous growth in the region provides innumerable opportunities as well as poses serious challenges in converting these opportunities into actual positive outcomes. If we let the region grow with a business as usual mindset, then such a growth is unsustainable and will put us back on slow track.

In order to reap the benefits of the potential of the region, an effort is being made to create a Vision for the PMR. The vision would be build based on the aspirations of the residents of the region. This would be possible only when the process is inclusive and participatory.

By Vision we mean painting a collective picture of a desired future for our city by present citizens and stakeholders. In a visioning process one is encouraged to free his mind of the present day concerns and ideate for future wellbeing of the city. Since our private lives are invariably linked to the public policies and policy decisions the need for a mediating body in government interventions is recognized. Janwani distinguishes itself by playing the role of a facilitator in building this vision for PMR by Punekars. Besides, Janwani will also facilitate the systematic translation of decisions taken in a participatory manner into implementable plans and actions.

Various stakeholder groups have been identified and at least 200 public consultations will be conducted with these stakeholders to find out how they want their city to be like. It would be in the form 3 kinds of wish lists viz. Indicators of Quality of life by common citizens, Professional & Special Needs list and Neighborhood list by residents of that area.  These wish lists thus complied will be presented in the form of clear and crisp objectives for the experts to make plans to achieve these objectives. This will be done by taking into account the carrying capacity of the region. The plans thus made will again be put forward in public domain for further discussions before finally incorporating them in the Development Plan and aligning them with the Budgets of the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
